Three Ways to Kick Up Yogurt

As the weather is getting colder, fall & winter clothes are finding their way into our closets and flu season is on the horizon. This is when we have to break out the tissues, Tylenol and antibiotics. If you or your child need to go on antibiotics, it’s always important to replenish the good bacteria that the antibiotics have destroyed. That is where yogurt comes in. And no, I’m not talking about the kind that’s sweetened with sugar or high fructose corn syrup and has fruit on the bottom; let’s face it – those fruit are not exactly fresh-picked. Your best bet is plain, low-fat or nonfat yogurt, preferably Greek, because it’s very thick, rich and creamy, and its thickness makes up for the lack of fat. Here are some ideas to get more yogurt in your diet:

Yogurt with Chocolate

Ingredients:

Two tablespoons dark chocolate chips
1 nonfat cup yogurt (it has to be nonfat because there is plenty of fat in the chocolate chips)

Directions:

Microwave the chocolate chips for 30 seconds. Mix with a spoon for about one minute until the consistency is smooth and the chips have completely melted. Add the yogurt and mix well. The chocolate will harden a bit and will turn into little chunks, but that won’t affect the flavor. This can be eaten alone, or used as cupcake icing.

Yogurt with Chives and Cucumbers

Ingredients:

1 cup nonfat/low-fat Greek yogurt
1 mini cucumber or 1/3 English cucumber (keep the peel on)
3 tablespoons chopped chives
Salt to taste

Directions:

Mix well and serve with whole wheat pita chips, whole-wheat pretzels or crackers. (I used Trader Joe’s Edemame Crackers).

Yogurt with Nuts and Apples

Ingredients:

1 cup non-fat yogurt
1 apple, chopped
6 walnut halves, chopped (or any other nuts you like)
A dash of cinnamon
Stevia to taste

Directions:

Mix well.
