Prevent the “Summer Slide” With School Zone Workbooks

Standard

448x448x06314_3-13_c2013.png.pagespeed.ic.reTXtTEOKUWe’re in mid-June and I am so ready for summer vacation to begin. I’m looking forward to all of the fun activities planned, but I am also very much aware of the “summer slide” and having to play “catch up” when the new school year begins. I believe that it is crucial for kids to not only continue to practice what they’ve learned in the past year, but to also learn new things and challenge themselves during the summer months. This is why a good workbook is a summer must-have. School Zone is a company that offers workbooks, flashcards, software and other study aids to help kids learn in a fun way. The Secret Mountain: Phenomenal Music for Kids (and Their Parents!)

Standard

image0Are you a fan of a particular genre of music and are trying to get your kids into it? For me it’s music from the Jazz Swing era. I play lot of CD’s at home but it’s more as a background as my kids, especially my 7-year-old daughter, prefer music that’s popular on the radio. The Secret Mountain is a company that has a range of book & CD combos of lots of different types of music, such as African lullabies, French Creole songs, and classical masterpieces. I received Swing Cafe for review, which is a book and CD album with songs from the Jazz Swing era and played it for my kids. Here’s what we thought: Read the rest of this entry

Unique Gift Idea for Kids: Green Golly & her Golden Flute Book & CD

Standard

Green Golly book cover with CD_300 dpiIt is so important to me that my kids will cultivate a love and appreciation of the arts. Not only is it healthy for the mind as well as the soul, but I am also hoping it will keep my kids grounded and more interested in things of substance, rather than celebrities and pop culture as they grow older. It’s not easy to get kids into classical music without visuals but Green Golly & her Golden Flute is a book & CD set that can get kids into classical music and provide an introduction to classic masterpieces. It’s a wonderful gift for any child who loves the story of Rapunzel. Read the rest of this entry

Your Little Girl Will Love Disney’s Minnie & Daisy BFF Chapter Books

Standard

81irOdWZuwL._SL1500_My six-year-old daughter loves the Disney princesses like most girls her age. She’s still into Mickey & Minnie, though, and loves watching Mickey Mouse Clubhouse with her younger brother. I recently found out about chapter books and magazines for young girls that are all about Minnie and Daisy. Since we try to encourage reading over watching TV, they are the perfect incentive to turn off the television. Read the rest of this entry

Get Your Kids Excited About Classical Music with “Listen to the Birds” Book & CD

Standard

71wm2-9065L._SL1000_I do my best to raise kids that are interested in many different subjects and are well-rounded. Having said that, I am trying hard to cultivate in my kids a love of the arts, whether it be theater, the ballet, or playing instruments. Classical music is not very easy to get kids excited about as it tends to be somewhat repetitive and for some, boring, as it is usually not accompanied with singing. The book and CD combo “Listen to the Birds: An Introduction to Classical Music” has unique features that make it fun and easy to listen to classical music. Read the rest of this entry

Bake With Your Kids With “Baking Around the World”

Standard

Updated-Picture1One of the best (and most fun) ways to learn about different cultures is through food. Making dishes from various cultures and cuisines with your children is a great way to bond with them, teach them math and organizational skills and also expose them to a variety of cultures that they most likely know very little about. “Baking Around the World” from Handstand Kids by Yvette Garfield is a baking book that’s made especially for children and gives parents and children alike the opportunity to travel the world and learn about new cultures by introducing them to a variety of baked treats.
